Finding a coin face up on the ground has always been considered a good luck charm.
And for a Virginia man who found a lucky penny and used it to scratch off a lottery ticket, the saying rings true.
Tim Clougherty of Accomack County, Virginia, was purchasing a lottery ticket that offered a prize of $10,000 per month for 10 years on April 29, 2024, when he noticed a penny in the Mini Mart parking lot.

When he got home, Clougherty used the penny to scratch off the numbers on the ticket. When he did that, he won the top prize.
“It took me a week to really settle in,” Clougherty told Virginia Lottery officials.
Instead of choosing monthly payouts, he took a lump sum in cash, which amounted to $1,028,000 before taxes.
The first hit of the $10,000-a-month game is January 2nd, and each player must pay $20 per ticket.
According to the Virginia Lottery, the odds of winning the game's top prize are 1 in 612,000, with two of the top prizes still up for grabs.
Last year, a Virginia woman won the $1 million lottery jackpot after winning a $500,000 prize online the same week.

“I'm in shock!” Jennifer Minton told lottery officials about the win last November. “I can't believe it!”
The Virginia Lottery raised an estimated $867 million last year, all of which went toward K-12 education in the state.
