Sulhee Jessica Woo rose to viral fame by focusing on authenticity.
Woo – known as the Bento Box Queen – catapulted to stardom on social media by sharing her simple yet beautifully prepared DIY bento-style lunches, winning the hearts of millions with her loving and creative touch.
Since launching her TikTok account in January 2020, Woo has amassed more than 5.6 million followers who eagerly watch her mix of cooking, DIY, family fun, beauty and lifestyle content.
Woo's journey to TikTok stardom began when she saw the platform's potential for sharing everyday activities. Encouraged by her sister, who saw her talents and creativity as perfect for YouTube, Woo initially tried her hand at the more production-intensive platform. However, it was TikTok's simplicity and accessibility that appealed to her.
“The aha moment with TikTok was like, 'Wow, these are regular people, normal people, sharing what they do every day,'” Woo recalls to Shawn Walchef of Cali BBQ Media, host of Restaurant Influencers.
This realization allowed her to share her life authentically and effortlessly and build a deeper connection with her followers.
The importance of sharing your story
Woo emphasizes the importance of building a community in the new creator economy.
Across her platforms YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, she makes it a point to be authentic and vulnerable, which has built a supportive community – and opened doors to opportunities like writing her cookbook, Let's Make Some Lunch, and participating in Netflix's Tom Brady Roast.
Woo believes that everyone can share their own journey with others and be successful by being authentic and approachable.
“Whether you're a dishwasher, a waiter, a bartender, a cook, anyone,” she explains. “You can also just share that journey. I think that's the hardest part: people sharing their journey and showing their vulnerability… but anyone can do it.”
With her focus on family, food, and real relationships, Woo continues to captivate her audience and make a lasting impression in the world of online content creation.
