I believe that every new year is the most important. The decisions we make will dramatically change the course of our lives.
The beginning of each year holds the promise of the opportunities that lie ahead. These occasions are traditionally referred to as “New Year’s resolutions.” But most New Year's resolutions remain unfulfilled.
So how can we make the New Year our best year ever by seizing the opportunities and setting ourselves and our families up for success?
What if I told you that there was a practical approach to creating and achieving vivid, goal-oriented goals for the coming year? Today we'll discuss how we can achieve targeted goals through a process of reflection and planning to make the most of the new year.

Do some conscious reflection
Let's look back at the year that just ended. When you think about everything that happened, what emotions did you experience most often? Joy, surprise, determination or maybe even uncertainty?
Tony Robbins once said: “The quality of our lives is the quality of our emotions.” As we look to the New Year, such a statement reflects an important truth: our emotions are not just reactions to the world around us, but also strong leaders who shape our experiences and decisions.
Understanding and reflecting on important experiences and emotions can be the key to creating and planning a fulfilling and purposeful year. This doesn't mean remembering every little detail, but rather remembering an overall feeling to generate gratitude and motivation.
In fact, reflective emotions can help us regain focus, operate in the present, and plan and implement our personal and professional intentions.
Take some time to sit, reflect, and reflect on emotional experiences that excite you about the past year and figure out why they were so important. Here are three experiences from my year that I will never forget.

Wonder
When was the last time you felt a sense of absolute wonder? Like a child with his mouth wide open, amazed at what is around you? For me, wonder is a feeling that opens me up to gratitude. As I've written before, gratitude can help us overcome challenges.
I recently wondered about this during a short vacation with my wife to Las Vegas. We visited the new Sphere venue to see U2 play. It was a moment to step away from our daily roles as parents and professionals and simply have an evening of fun. What was a brief pause became a moment of wonder. I was impressed by the sphere with its incredible architecture. The performance and venue are a testament to human creativity and make you feel like anything is possible. I looked around and saw so many adults who looked like little children.
Reflecting on this sense of wonder and realizing that anything is possible helps me approach the new year with the abundance mindset I need to achieve my goals.
curiosity
The world is changing so much every day. How do you react? I tend to approach these things with curiosity. It helps me take a step back and approach a situation in a more analytical and unbiased way.
For example, the economic world in 2023 has been a roller coaster ride, especially with fluctuating interest rates. Recently, the Federal Reserve paused interest rate hikes, stabilizing them for now and raising a number of questions: What's next for the economy? When will interest rates go down? (I'm guessing by July.) Will falling interest rates stimulate the commercial real estate market or boost the stock market even further? Is there a chance at the moment?
As you can see, it makes me completely curious. There are more questions than answers, and I know this curiosity will lead me to look deeper for new and exciting opportunities. What new experiences will I have in the new year? I can't wait to find out.
determination
Every year I am determined to make the biggest difference and optimize as many opportunities as possible. It's one of the key emotions I've experienced this year, and I hope the same is the case for you too.
But when I think back on my year, what was it that made me decide? Someone recently asked me if I had experienced a midlife crisis. At 46 I don't necessarily feel it, but midlife means you may have more years behind you than in front of you – I think that might be the case for me.
This made me think and I felt a deep gratitude for my family, my health and the strong meaning of my life. This in turn filled me with the determination to maintain these things in order to make the most of this phase of my life (the back half). Now I am determined to continue focusing on my health to live life to the fullest. This starts by saying this is going to be an amazing year.
With this simple reflection exercise—isolating and exploring three emotional experiences from your year—you'll be well on your way to developing a growth mindset that will keep you present and focused on achieving your goals. Now the next step is to write down these goals.
Create a personal plan for the new year
Life shouldn't be like Tetris where we hope that no matter what happens, everything will work itself out. That's not the best way to optimize things. Instead, prioritize and visualize what you want to accomplish in the next twelve months.
Creating a conscious plan for an entire new year sounds daunting, but it's actually quite simple and only requires about 90 minutes of your time.
Start by gathering a few essentials: a huge, clean wall calendar (I use The Big Calendar by Jesse Itzler), trade show markers, and/or some color-coded sticky notes. Next, write down the events that are already happening – your parents' 50th wedding anniversary, your daughter's graduation, or the family spring break vacation.
Then block out the days when work will take up on you or your spouse—and do this throughout the year so you can plan accordingly. For me, that could be the Leverage & Growth Summit taking place February 26th to March 1st (I hope to see you there), the launch of the PIMD Momentum Mastermind and subsequent retreat this spring, or the PIMDCON annual conference in September (details). soon!).
If you have children, be sure to add their schedule, including any special events (e.g., parent-teacher conferences or their sports games or concert performances).
Yes, your year will look busy at this point, but there should still be plenty of room left for your financial growth and spontaneity.
With the essentials out of the way, it's time to move on to the personal part of the conscious personal plan. Think about the activities you want to experience. Do you want to make passive income or get into entrepreneurship? Make a list. Then share this experience with your family: What is the one thing your children want to do? Is your spouse going on a weekend trip? Sketch it out on the calendar and start inserting them.
Step back and visualize the experiences you can have this year, encouraging more emotional reflection that will help you make your dreams for the year a reality. When we look at the whole year from a bird's eye view, we can rejoice in the fact that each day is part of a larger, intentional plan.
Once your year is on the calendar, start planning the details to make these things happen. Because a decision means nothing without action.
Don't miss this Leverage & Growth Summit This winter will see a unique event specifically tailored to physicians looking to explore entrepreneurial and growth opportunities beyond traditional clinical roles. It is an enriching platform that offers inspiring keynotes from successful physician entrepreneurs, interactive workshops on various areas such as digital health and investing, valuable networking with like-minded professionals and insightful panel discussions on healthcare trends.
This summit is not just a conference; It's a movement to expand your professional horizons, strengthen your entrepreneurial spirit and connect with pioneers who are reshaping healthcare. Mark your calendar for a transformative experience that promises to redefine the intersection of medicine and entrepreneurship.
Intentional action leads to transformative experiences
Start the year by consciously reflecting on what happened last year. Take some of these challenges or lessons learned with you as they will help you determine your goals and your personal planning process.
Also note that creating a personal plan for 2024 does not include everyday tasks like running errands. Instead, the focus is on visualizing exciting activities you want to experience, like trips, once-in-a-lifetime trips, fun adventures, and maybe even a PIMD event or two.
Hang the calendar in your office to keep track of your personal schedule. It's not just an organizational tool, but a map for your emotional and personal journey for the coming year. Personal plans help you intentionally engage in experiences you truly value, making it easier to say no to less important things that might come up.
Allow 90 minutes to complete this process as quickly as possible. Along the way, you'll find opportunities to join great communities of like-minded people who have a growth mindset, great strategies, and are truly preparing for the future.
That's it for today. Keep thinking, keep planning and keep achieving. I believe in you and your ability to achieve the life of your dreams. This is going to be a fantastic year!
