The Washington Post confirmed that Editor in Chief Sally Buzbee resigned from her post on Sunday in an unexpected decision that will change the publication's editorial landscape.

Buzbee's departure was announced to employees in an internal email from CEO William Lewis, who called the decision an “abrupt shakeup at the top” and noted that former Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Matt Murray would temporarily take over Buzbee's position.

“We are troubled by the sudden departure of our editor in chief, Sally Buzbee, and the suggestion by our publisher and CEO, Will Lewis, that our company's financial problems are not due to mismanagement in our leadership but to our work as journalists,” the Washington Post Guild said in a statement to USA Today. “We are also concerned about the lack of diversity at the top levels of the organization, especially as the Post seeks to reach new audiences while continuing to report on the nation's and the world's most pressing issues.”

Murray is expected to leave the company after the US presidential election in November 2024 and will be replaced by Robert Winnett, who will serve as editor-in-chief. Winnett was previously deputy editor-in-chief of the Telegraph Media Group.

“I am deeply honored to join such a prestigious news institution with a long, rich history of memorable and influential journalism, and I want to thank Sally for her tremendous leadership,” Murray told The Washington Post. “I am excited by Will and Jeff's vision for the Post's next era of growth and reinvention, and I can't wait to get started.”

In addition, the Post will change its organizational structure and create a third newsroom that will focus on service and social media journalism and will exist separately from the publication's core news reporting.

“The goal is to deliver engaging, exciting and accurate news to the millions of Americans who feel traditional news isn't for them but still want to stay informed – where they are and in the style they want,” the post said.

The publication will also continue to leverage AI and video storytelling to reach a wider audience in the changing landscape of the industry.

The Washington Post is owned by Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos, who bought the publication in 2013 for an estimated $250 million in cash.
