It's no surprise that the return-to-office order has caused dismay among some employees. Many workers don't want to give up their home office jobs and start commuting again.

A new report from Bamboo HR found that about 25% of vice presidents and C-suite executives hoped that implementing strict return-to-office policies would help create “voluntary turnover” among employees. Meanwhile, 28% of remote workers surveyed said they would consider quitting their jobs if a five-day office model was imposed on them.

Bamboo HR called this concept “covert layoffs.” Nevertheless, around 40% of executives and managers surveyed said they had to conduct a wave of layoffs last year because fewer employees quit than expected following new internal labor regulations.

“This dissatisfaction could lead to further brain drain and impact not only morale but also the stability and innovation potential of the workforce,” says the study of employees who are dissatisfied with the forced return to the office.

The debate about returning to the office is at the forefront of major companies such as Amazon, Tesla and Salesforce. Starting October 1, certain employees will be required to be in the office four to five days a week.

According to Desk Bird, an estimated 90% of companies with office space in the U.S. will return to office work by the end of 2024.
