Nearly four years after resigning as president of Liberty University, Jerry Falwell Jr. and the university's board of trustees have announced a global settlement that effectively ends all legal and personal disputes between the two parties. This comes after a lengthy legal battle cast a shadow over the university.
The settlement, announced jointly by Falwell and the Board of Trustees, is said to be based on a mutual commitment to preserve Liberty University's founding mission of promoting Christ-centered education. Exact terms were not disclosed, but the settlement is said to address Falwell's retirement and severance package, as well as the use of Jerry Falwell Sr.'s name, image and likeness.
Jerry Falwell Sr., the founder of Liberty University, was a key figure in evangelical circles until his death in 2007. The younger Falwell, who succeeded his father as president, filed a lawsuit against the university last year, accusing the institution of improper use of his father's legacy.
Both Falwell and the Board of Trustees expressed regret for the “lengthy and painful process” and acknowledged their respective roles in the conflicts. Falwell, who resigned from his post in 2020 amid scandal, apologized for the “misjudgments and errors” made during his tenure. The Board of Trustees also apologized for unspecified “errors and mistakes” on its part.
Liberty University also announced that Falwell and his wife, who were previously banned from campus, are now welcome back. The gesture is seen as part of a broader effort to heal the divisions that have plagued the university since Falwell's departure.
