In just three steps, we'll help you put an end to time anxiety with a bulletproof method and ensure your emails display beautifully in the email clients your subscribers use.

In this blog post, you'll learn how to QA and monitor your emails with Litmus – using email client previews, spam testing, and more – to ensure your emails look and function as perfectly as possible. as you intended.

Step 1: Create your email

Starting the email creation process in Litmus gives your emails a central home so anyone on your team can easily find an email they may need.

When you're ready to create your first email in Litmus, select “Create new“, and you are on your way.

  • If you click Create New on the home page, you can enter a title for your email. We recommend choosing a title that you can easily find again or one that matches the name of your email service provider or marketing automation platform. Select either “Build” or “Test” and then “Next.”
  • Even if you don't import your email right away, this will create an email project in your Litmus inbox. This can be a great way to add placeholder emails to plan future work!

Pro tip: Develop a naming convention for your team to use in Litmus to organize work and avoid confusion over email in your account.

Alternatively, if you use another platform to create emails, you can import your emails into Litmus from an affiliated email service provider (ESP) by importing or pasting HTML, coding from scratch, or a template use in the builder.

Here's a detailed look at each of these options to help you choose the one that's best for your team:

  • Use your personal litmus email Address to send the email you want to preview directly to Litmus from your ESP. This ensures that you test your email under the same conditions that your subscribers would see, including any additional code or changes introduced by your ESP. Using this method will also generate a spam test (more on that later)! Copy the unique email address with the Litmus domain and then add it as a test contact or paste it as a recipient in your ESP.
  • ESP synchronization is the fastest way to import your email into Litmus for testing. It connects to your ESP instantly and continues to update Litmus and your ESP even if you make changes to the email after import. Select “Manage your ESPs” in the right corner of the ESP dropdown to add a connection. After you are connected, your ESPs will appear in the drop-down menu. Note: ESP sync is only available on certain plans. Therefore, if you don't see it, double check that you have this feature.
  • Create your email in Litmus or insert pre-written code. Simply select the build option shown above. Then you can choose a blank email (for building from scratch or inserting code) or one of the pre-built templates you have saved in your design library. Do you need inspiration? Litmus offers a selection of free email templates to get you started!

Step 2: Get your email test results

Once your email arrives in Litmus or you've inserted your code, open the Previews and Quality Assurance tab to see how your email will appear and the important checks it performs before sending.

Pro tip: You can customize your view to show all previews right here in the full-length quality assurance checklist, rather than just seeing a cropped view. Choose grid view to view in thumbnail and get a detailed look at specific customers.

Litmus Email Previews

Scroll down to see all your pre-shipment checks, such as: E.g. email envelope previews, subject line testing, UTM checks, what your email looks like without images, and how long it takes to load. You can quickly jump from section to section using the left navigation.

Once you've sent your email to your test address, you'll receive spam test results with 8 important spam checks to ensure your authentication records are set up properly. These include DMARC, DKIM and more. In addition, it ensures that you are not on blacklists. We will now also check whether you have set up and configured BIMI correctly! If you didn't use your test address, don't worry – you can find a unique email address to send your email to to update the Spam Testing section in this specific checklist.

You can even share the results and previews with the rest of your team (or keep them on hand for your own records – and sanity!). Click Share to either generate a public link or download the results in a ZIP file. To customize a public checklist:

See? Nothing there. In just three steps and a few clicks, you can see how your email looks in over 100 email clients and devices to ensure it displays beautifully in your subscribers' inboxes. And that's not all you can do with Litmus. There's so much more to an email than just how it looks, and Litmus is here to help you through every step of the process.

Step 3: Monitor your email with Email Guardian

You've tested your emails in Litmus so you can be sure they're working properly before sending – but what about afterward? Detect unexpected problems after sending by monitoring your emails with Email Guardian.

We recommend monitoring emails with Email Guardian after the email has been fully tested and quality assured. With just one click, you can monitor your emails in the Previews and Quality Assurance tab.

If Email Guardian detects a change in your email due to a broken or slow-loading link or an unexpected email client update, you will receive an immediate notification so you can take action to resolve the issue.
