An act of kindness occurred in a pawn shop in New England, and support has since spread around the world.

Jenelle Marie, an associate at US Gold & Pawn in Manchester, New Hampshire, was moved by the story of Donald, a 90-year-old Air Force veteran who was struggling financially due to increased rent while also caring for his wife, who had recently been diagnosed with dementia.

Donald frequently visited the pawn shop to sell his jewelry for rent money, prompting Marie and her fiancé to start a GoFundMe campaign to help the veteran.

“He told me that his wife had just been diagnosed with dementia and his landlord had to raise the rent. That kind of touched me deeply,” Marie told NewsNation. “I told the store owner and he decided not to charge him interest… I thought that was really nice of him and it inspired me and my fiancé to start what I thought was a little GoFundMe campaign.”

Marie made a TikTok presenting Donald with the initial $1,300 raised, and the campaign went viral. Donations started pouring in.

“I hope that we can learn two lessons from this: first, the smallest act of kindness can change someone's life in more ways than you can imagine. Second, it will raise awareness that we need to do more for our veterans,” Marie said.

In a follow-up video, Marie posted birthday wishes for Donald from across the country, including a gift bag filled with signed Los Angeles Dodgers hats and balls.

The GoFundMe amount is currently over $434,000.
