Having run my own advertising and PR agency for the past 22 years, I've learned that you always have to think ahead and be resourceful. What worked yesterday may not necessarily work today or tomorrow, especially now in our post-pandemic world.

When the cost of living crisis hit, I saw that many businesses were struggling. They were struggling to find leads, fill their calendars with appointments, and set up automation in their business to save time and money. I have experience with this – over two decades of experience – so I developed an offering to help businesses of all sizes stay afloat. But the challenge I faced was how to get the word out about this offering. So I turned to meta advertising – advertising on Facebook and Instagram.

I have years of experience in digital marketing and advertising and here are my tips on how to scale my company's digital marketing for just $10 a day.

1. Make an irresistible offer

You need to think about what makes people stop and want to talk to you. Put yourself in the shoes of your potential customers. If you don't think they would accept your great offer, would others? Focusing on the benefits of your product or service that your customers will get out of it will help you craft your enticing offer.

For example, if you're a real estate agent selling properties, instead of promoting a specific home on social media with a photo of the listing, you should target investors – offering them the opportunity to purchase a great property without even showing a picture of the property. Ultimately, you're interested in the return on investment, not the home for sale.

Guarantees can also be tempting, as long as you can keep your promise and it doesn't sound too far-fetched. The ads that guarantee, “We'll make sure we get you 15 fully paying clients within a month” are too unrealistic and actually scare away potential clients. Instead, you could offer, for example, a 30-day satisfaction guarantee if you offer a coaching course, or “See results in 30 days” if you're a personal trainer.

2. Create a design that attracts attention

The best designs rely on a brilliant, witty, and clever headline that grabs attention. I've found that slick, professionally shot and edited videos don't work at all. People are on social media to catch up on news from their friends and family – not to watch a fancy video ad. Attention spans are decreasing by the minute. Don't believe for a second that your target audience is watching your 90-second video that tells them to go to a landing page. Instead, use a simple, easy-to-read font combined with a plain background that catches the eye. When it comes to your static image design, less is more. Your headline should be the only text that makes up the graphic. This will make viewers stop scrolling immediately.

Don't have a designer? No worries. Programs like Canva make it very easy to create different designs for social media channels and even have built-in sizing templates so you can be sure your artwork will fit the bill. The Facebook Ad Manager platform also has an AI feature that automatically redesigns your artwork for different placements, eliminating the need to design multiple versions.

3. Define your campaign goals

Facebook and Instagram recently revamped their lead form ads, allowing advertisers to generate leads cost-effectively using the built-in forms. Ultimately, Meta wants its audience to stay on its channels for as long as possible, so businesses that choose to use the built-in forms and keep their audience engaged will be rewarded.

Think about your goals and structure your campaign accordingly using the platform's options. If you're looking to get more sales and leads, lead forms are ideal. Another great way to increase engagement with prospects is to run an engagement campaign that encourages people to message you directly. This is often a preferred way of communicating with people under 45.

4. Optimize the ROI of your advertising spend

With your designs, it's important to see what works and what doesn't without changing too many variables at once. I always recommend spending no more than $10 per day on your ads to begin with. That way, your ad creative is actually doing all the work, not your budget. If your ad or offer is lackluster, a $100 per day test may skew your results because you're spending more than your competitors. If you decide to test with just $10 per day, within a day or two you'll see the return on investment for the creative you're testing. If your goals are being met, move on to $10 per day. If not, turn off that ad set, launch a second creative, and start again.

5. Slowly increase your meta advertising budget for consistent campaign performance

Once you see results with your creation, it's time to scale. That doesn't always mean you need to increase your budget right away. Often, it takes a while for the pixel to go through a learning phase. Many of my clients, like me, spend just $10 a day on ads and get several leads each day. But if you want to extend the learning phase, start slowly by increasing your budget by no more than 25% every few days.

If you want to market your business on a budget, it's definitely possible. Thanks to platforms like Meta, you can now quickly see what's working and what's not. Never before in the business world have you been able to start or stop an advertising campaign so quickly and measure results down to the dollar spent.
