Here at SPI, we talk a lot about how niche rich are – and Victoria Moll of Contempo Coding is living proof of the power of niche marketing! Victoria has generated a steady six-figure income and a huge YouTube following in the niche area of medical coding, primarily through her YouTube channel.
Can it get any more special?
In early 2024, Victoria appeared on the SPI podcast with Pat and shared how she built a thriving business that allowed her to quit her job – and now runs a business on her own terms.
Great success in an unusual niche: Medical coding
When you think of possible side income opportunities, medical coding probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind.
It captures data about patient diagnoses, procedures, services and medical equipment and converts it into standardized codes that are used for insurance billing, tracking statistics, analytics and more.
Although it sounds dry on paper, Victoria has made medical coding a successful focus of her business by breathing a healthy dose of life into the content she shares on her channel and website. She uses her background as a pop culture blogger to “put a different spin” on medical coding topics and spice up something that could become boring in less knowledgeable hands.
How YouTube became their launch pad
Although she began making videos in 2017, Victoria's YouTube journey didn't really take off until the pandemic, when she was working full-time as a medical coding reviewer and running her YouTube channel on the side.
During lockdown, Victoria became a regular chat performer on Pat's daily YouTube series 'Income Stream', where she soaked up tips and strategies on teaching, lighting, live streaming and building an online business through niche marketing.
The Income Stream provided Victoria with a great opportunity to focus on further developing Contempo Coding.
She set up a proper home office, equipped the company with appropriate equipment and began researching how to build and engage an audience on YouTube and use tools such as keyword optimization.
Live streams became a powerful way for Victoria to convey concepts, share her screen, and interact with her audience in real time. She often used a document camera—like a lightweight overhead projector—to walk through examples from medical coding books.
She also learned to show the “funny side” of her personality in her videos – which, along with her expertise and credibility, helped her channel quickly gain traction. Contempo Coding now has over 100,000 subscribers and Victoria's silver play button award takes pride of place in the background of all her videos.
Building a successful product line
On her YouTube channel, Victoria provides a wealth of free advice and tutorials on medical coding, and she also monetizes her expertise through online courses and programs.
She is an instructor for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) curriculum, which allows her to teach courses for various medical coding certifications. Although annual licensing and student fees were required (though she no longer licenses her material), this saved her from having to develop an entire curriculum from scratch.
On her website, Victoria offers her own specialty certification courses and continuing education programs to help people advance their careers in the field of medical coding.
She has also gotten involved in affiliate marketing and partnered with an educational company that offers a formal program for individuals looking to get into medical coding.
A decision filter for new possibilities
Due to the success of her YouTube channel and product line, Victoria is constantly juggling ideas and opportunities for new books, courses, channels, live streams, and other niche marketing strategies. As a result, she's found that it's easy to get overwhelmed.
She offered online coaching for a short time, but it increasingly hindered her ability to create her content.
Eventually she realized she needed a method to evaluate potential opportunities and select the best ones, so she developed a simple three-point filter:
- How interested am I in this opportunity?
- How much time would it take?
- How much revenue could it potentially generate?
“If there's something that hits all three, that's what I do,” Victoria says. “If not, OK, what's the next best thing I can do?”
This new approach has brought Victoria even more success and allowed her to pursue new opportunities without over-taking on her own or losing interest.
Delegating for more magic and less overload
Victoria brings a healthy dose of self-confidence to her side hustle. She knows she doesn't want to manage a team and is careful not to grow too quickly. She prefers to keep her business lean.
However, she hired someone to handle the time-consuming editing of her videos, which has greatly streamlined her workflow and helped give her content even more momentum.
“It was just so rewarding to find someone who had done this… I make a point, hold out my hand, and then sparks fly out of my hand… I would never have thought how to do this.”
Victoria's fiancé Chuoc has even joined the business and helps part-time with shipping, reporting, and housekeeping, allowing Victoria to maintain her flow as a creator and teacher – without being overwhelmed.
Advice on building a brand in an unconventional niche
Victoria's success shows that you can build a lucrative business even in an unusual niche like medical coding. The key takeaways from Victoria's success are:
- Bring your personality into the conversation and find creative ways to get your audience excited about your topic
- Conduct keyword research and optimize your content
- Explore different content media such as video courses, live streams and podcasts
- Find ways to filter and prioritize new opportunities without overwhelming yourself
- Outsource proofreading or other tasks that consume your time and creative energy.
- Use your networks to find freelance support
Most importantly, Victoria's journey shows the riches that can be gained by serving an unconventional niche market. Medical coding may sound dry, but her ability to bring the subject to life and build an enthusiastic following proves that there is an audience for virtually any topic if it is packaged correctly.
You could say she cracked the code. 😉
