“Rocky” star Sylvester Stallone's highly anticipated collection of rare and vintage watches went up for auction this week. The 11-piece collection sold for $6.7 million, exceeding original pre-sale estimates.
One watch, the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, broke the record for the most expensive modern watch ever sold at Sotheby's after it attracted a bid of $5.4 million. It had originally been estimated to sell for between $2.5 million and $5 million.

“The sale of the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime was a once-in-a-lifetime celebration not only of a masterpiece of technical excellence by Switzerland's most respected watchmakers, but also of the legendary icon Sylvester Stallone, a deeply influential and admired collector for decades,” said Geoff Hess, head of Sotheby's Americas watch department, in a statement.
In a video posted on Instagram, five candidates can be seen fighting for the watches in a bidding war lasting almost four minutes in front of over 100 spectators.
The watch was eventually auctioned off by a private, anonymous collector based in Asia.
“I have been privileged to own some truly remarkable watches over the years, each with its own character and story,” Stallone said last month in a statement ahead of this week's auction, according to GQ. “I enjoy the collecting process like so many others in this passionate community who don't just see watches as an accessory, but admire them for their history, craftsmanship, artistry – but most importantly – the feeling they convey.”
