Although Apple announced some major AI changes to Siri at its WWDC event last month, it's unclear when those changes will make their way to iPhone screens. However, a new report from Bloomberg chief correspondent Mark Gurman provides clarity on the timeline.

Gurman, whose Apple information he has shared in the past has a hit rate of 86.5%, wrote in his Sunday Power On newsletter that while Apple Intelligence AI will be released this fall, the most important Siri updates will arrive next spring.

This includes allowing Siri to access and work with other Apple apps based on a simple command. For example, if asked, “Hey Siri, what's my driver's license number?” Siri will soon be able to search the Photos app, find a picture of the license plate, and even enter the numbers into a web form.

Another Siri upgrade that's on hold until next year is Siri's contextual understanding, the ability to interpret what an iPhone user is looking at.

Although Siri will be upgraded with ChatGPT and a new design in the fall, Gurman says the voice assistant will lack these important contextual features.

According to the same report, the Siri update will not be complete until developers begin beta testing the features in January and Apple publicly releases the upgrade in spring 2025.

The Bloomberg report is consistent with Apple’s public statements.

Apple noted in its June press release that Apple Intelligence will be released in beta in the fall, but “some features, software platforms, and additional languages will be added over the next year.” The fine print leaves room for certain features to be introduced later, after Apple Intelligence's release in the fall.

Apple entered the AI business almost two years after launching ChatGPT, but decided to take a more collaborative approach to AI development. In addition to developing AI in-house, Apple also decided to integrate ChatGPT directly into its products, opening the doors to AI models from other competitors.

AI could also prompt hundreds of millions of older iPhone users to upgrade this fall—Apple Intelligence only works on the latest iPhones.
