In one of the most shocking moments in recent comic book history, writer Brian Michael Bendis – a longtime Marvel Comics staple – travels to DC Comics and signs an exclusive deal with the publisher. The mind behind Ultimate Spider-Man, House of H, Secret Invasion, Powers and Spider-Men – some of the best Marvel comics of the last decade – will be working with a whole new group of characters in the coming years.
DC announced the news (via Twitter): “We are thrilled to welcome Brian Michael Bendis exclusively to the DC family on a multi-year, diverse contract. He's one of the industry's leading writers who has written so many unforgettable stories wherever he has been, and we can't wait to see what he has planned for the DC Universe.
Bendis retweeted the statement, adding: “This is real. I love you all. Change is good. Change is healthy. I'm bursting with ideas and inspiration. Details to follow!”
This won't be the first time Bendis has written in DC. In 2000, he wrote a story for Batman Chronicles #21 entitled “Citizen Wayne”, in which Clark Kent attempts to learn Bruce Wayne's darkest secrets. However, Bendis has never had a full-time gig at DC before, so the doors are wide open for him to take on old characters and create some new ones.
Although readers who don't read comics may not be familiar with him, they will recognize some of the characters he created. Bendis is credited with creating Jessica Jones, which has her own Netflix series; Quake, one of the main characters in Agents of SHIELD; Maria Hill, who has appeared in numerous Marvel films; and Ganke; Who Ned Leeds from Spider-Man Homecoming is based on, whether Sony and Marvel want to admit it or not.
There is currently no information on what Bendis will be working on at DC first, and the author still has comics finished at Marvel, such as the Spider-Men II miniseries.
