What does something ironic? It is more difficult to define than you may think – almost as difficult as for some people to identify spam from a legitimate e -mail.

As an e -mail marketer, you know spam when you see it, and probably define it as unwanted, unwanted, undesirable news that is sent to a large list of contacts. According to Merriam Webster, the irony is defined as “incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result”.

So irony is like rain on your wedding day, a free trip if you have already paid, or good advice that you just didn't take with you. Right? If someone knew what makes something ironic, it is Alanis Morissette. At least they would think.

It turned out that the singer was repeatedly proclaimed because he misleaded us all. During a appearance in the late, late show, she finally seemed to admit that the texts in her song “Ironic” are not really ironic. (Does that make the song ironic?)

In the same year, Alanis released her hit -single, a notorious e -mailing marketing campaign with ironic proportions, all over America by inlet. Just the form of the forgotten archive of E -Mail history -that is this story.

Do you remember the 90s?

It was the era of Jnco-Jeans, hair with frosted tips and AOL Instant Messenger in the dial-up internet. Backstreet was back, Tamagatchis were neglected and the World Wide Web was new and exciting. If you had an e -mail address, you have opened everything that ended up in your inbox. They were easier times.

However, e -mail spam turned into a big problem in the nineties. The Oxford Dictionary made its 1998 edition as a junk email to become an overly familiar problem.

In 1996 Dave Rand and Paul Vixie founded the non-profit maps (email abuse prevention system). The project delivered anti-spam support through a collection of block-loving IP addresses.

In the same year, what could be called the most ironic e -mail marketing campaign of all time went to millions of people. The senders tried to help internet users with the same problem cards they could solve. They wanted to give their customers a way to filter out spam from their e -mail mailboxes.

And … what could be nicer when people are informed about this fly solution than too Spam them?

Xoom, email robot and the anti-spam spammer

The 90s also brought us geocities. Before social media or blogging platforms such as WordPress, this free web hosting service was one of the few things that Joe could use to create their own storage space on the Internet.

Xoom was a similar web hosting service in the early days. (Note: This is not the Xoom that PayPal has.) Xoom has earned money by sending advertising news to its customers. In the same month in which Alanis Morrissette won a Billboard Music Award, Xoom unleashed an ironic e -mail marketing campaign that will live in shame forever.

WIRED MAGAZINE called it “The Spam to end all spams”. Xoom started e -mail robot, a free spam filter tool that should offer it as part of a package business for six million e -mail addresses. This is a lot if you believe that in 1996, according to the book computer: A History of the Information Machine, only around 10 million computers were connected to the Internet.

Xoom unadorned the customer's spam before he actually did it. An Xoom PR initiative named the step as “the world's largest spam”. Founder Laurent Massa explained the strategy for cable:

“It's a kind of joke. They hate junk emails, and that's why we send you junk emails and tell you that you should receive our free product so you can stop it. ”

The wired writer Janelle Brown noticed the irony of the campaign. She wondered if there were the expected results or whether there would be consequences for Xoom.

“The stunt should win cheap advertising for the new company for the new company, but the irony of spamming to stop spamming is a different matter overall. Just because the junk email tries to prove a point does that mean that it doesn't increase the anger of spam haters and ISPs? ”

Massa seemed confident that more people would get the joke than to get angry to become spam from her web host. Perhaps this is because it is not really spaming to say your customer about a new, free product. Or maybe it was because Xoom regularly ads to its users by e -mail to his users (which is completely spam).

I am desperate to learn more about this bizarre marketing tactics from the early days of the Internet. But unfortunately it seems that these efforts before the occurrence of online publications to every single thing that happens on earth. Whatever!

We may never know whether this E -Mail Marketing Campaign worked for the e -mail robot product. We know that Xoom was classified as a 7th most popular website on the Internet before it fades into the annals of internet history.

What is E -Mail spam, spam?

As a modern digital marketer, you probably viewed your email analysis and left out a annoyed sigh when you see that a subscriber has reported the newsletter that he has registered as a spam.

(Okay, maybe you have more than just sigh)

Perhaps you don't understand how you can log out politely, or maybe spam is simply in the eye of the viewer.

For Spam filters, it is easy to confuse your e -mail marketing campaigns with junk mail -almost as easy as it is to confuse a black fly in your Chardonnay for something ironic.

Many E -Mail service providers only warn of Spam problems if it is too late. However, the e -mail about the delivery capacity functions of acid in campaign -Pecheck will help you remove spam signals and inform you on the block list before pressing sends. We do this by testing your message against almost two dozen spam filters and the most popular block list services.

In contrast to the 90s, anti-spam efforts and digital data protection laws are the norm today. We no longer read every e -mail we receive because we all get tons of them every day. An e -mail that ends in a spam folder is a wasted e -mail that is never open. Not allowed too long, and it will also harm your sender point.

Therefore, e -mails will help you to improve the availability and much more. Because there is nothing ironic to deliver E -Mail Perfection.
